Six Principles That Shape Our Work

Written Documentation

Every piece receives a written intake examination. Nothing is assumed, nothing proceeds without a clear record.

Instrument-Grade Timing

Movements are regulated and tested on a Witschi timing apparatus across multiple positions before return.

Pressure-Tested Sealing

Seal work is followed by both dry and wet pressure testing, with a written result provided to the owner.

Owner Consultation

Significant decisions — particularly around refinishing — are discussed with you before work proceeds.

Photographic Record

Restoration pieces are photographed throughout the process; the record is shared with the owner on completion.

Transparent Timelines

Timelines are communicated honestly from the outset and updated when circumstances change.

Expertise

Depth of Mechanical Knowledge

Mechanical watchmaking is not a skill that transfers readily from other precision work — it requires specific, accumulated familiarity with the behaviour of calibres, the characteristics of individual lubricants, and the tolerance thresholds of components under different conditions. The team at Wira Chronos brings this accumulated experience to every service.

  • Experience across Swiss, German, and Japanese mechanical movements
  • Familiarity with vintage and scarce calibre configurations
  • Transparent communication when a piece presents unusual challenges

"A calibre that has been serviced badly is often harder to bring back to specification than one that has simply been neglected. The baseline matters. We always establish it before touching anything."

Witschi Timing Results — What We Verify

  • Rate stability across five or six positions
  • Amplitude at rest and in motion
  • Beat error within manufacturer tolerance
  • Multi-day rate observation before release

Technology

Proper Instruments, Properly Used

A Witschi timing apparatus provides objective measurement of how a regulated movement performs across positions and over time. We use it as standard — not as an optional step, but as the confirmation that determines when a movement is ready to be returned. The results are documented and can be shared with the owner on request.

Client Service

Communication at Every Stage

Leaving a valuable watch with a workshop requires a degree of trust. We try to make that trust well-placed by keeping owners informed throughout. For standard services, this means a clear timeline and a notification when the work is complete. For restoration pieces, it means regular updates and a consultation before each decision point.

Value

Transparent Pricing, No Additions

Following the intake examination, we provide a written cost estimate for the agreed scope of work. That estimate does not expand without your knowledge. If the condition of the watch reveals additional requirements during service, we contact you before proceeding — not after completing work you did not approve.

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive Features of the Workshop

Conservation Over Transformation

Where many workshops approach refinishing as the default, we treat it as a considered option. Surfaces that carry decades of legitimate wear often hold part of the watch's character. We will always discuss the implications of any finishing decision before proceeding.

Service Record for Each Watch

The intake examination, scope of work, and timing test results are all recorded in writing. For restoration pieces, the photographic record adds a visual dimension to this documentation. The owner receives the relevant elements on return.

Suitable for Inherited and Significant Pieces

We regularly work with watches that carry personal meaning beyond their market value — family heirlooms, gifts of long standing, pieces tied to particular memories. These are handled with the same level of care as any collector reference, and with appropriate sensitivity to what the owner values in the piece.

Unhurried, Attentive Workshop Relationship

We limit the volume of work we undertake at any given time so that no piece is deprioritised. If we cannot take on a commission promptly, we will say so honestly rather than accept the watch and leave it waiting unattended.
